Durham's Partnership for Children
Durham’s Partnership for Children aims to ensure every child in Durham enters school ready to succeed, we lead community strategies for children birth to age 5 and their families that promote healthy development and learning and enhance access to high-quality care.
As an organization, we strive to provide access to resources for all of Durham’s youth. We are thrilled to be a part of Imagination Library so that we can help get books into the hands of Durham’s youngest citizens.
But, WHY should we read to babies?
Did you know that 90% of critical brain development happens in the first five years of life? During this time a child’s brain has at least double the synapses of an adult. This is important because synapses allow us to make meaning of the world around us and to connect pieces of information.
We know that reading to very young children, beginning at birth, can have a lasting impact on children’s success in school and in later life. Research says that just 25 books in the home can propel a student two years further in their education, than those with no books AND that each and every addition to a home library has a positive impact on children.
So, what are you waiting for!? Enroll your child(ren) today to get one high quality, developmentally appropriate book, delivered to your mailbox each month, until your child’s fifth birthday at no cost to your family!
